Transforming an Ordinary Outdoor Area into a Mountain-View Retreat
This Denver homeowner had a vision to maximize their outdoor living space with a view of the breathtaking mountains—something more than just a deck, but a true outdoor retreat. What started as a small concrete pad and a simple upper-level deck quickly evolved into an ambitious project. The goal was clear: create a multi-level outdoor space that could be enjoyed in all seasons while soaking in the incredible scenery.
But the project wasn’t without its challenges. The roofline on the north side of the house presented a challenge to work around, and an exhaust fan from the kitchen had to be managed. But as with every great project, the team at Western Sky Designs found a way. The exhaust vent was carefully extended through the deck and out the side, while the old roof over the garage was removed to make room for a deck with a dry system to keep the area below dry.
What followed was the creation of a deck that not only met but exceeded the homeowner’s expectations. The top deck now features a stunning pergola with a retractable canopy, perfect for those hot summer days when shade is needed. A fireplace and heaters add warmth for chilly evenings, while ceiling fans keep the air cool during the warmer months. The result is a versatile and beautiful space that’s perfect for every season, offering sweeping mountain views from every angle.
